You can compare two things directly, side by side, with no number needed.
Think of it like two towers of blocks standing side by side: Stand two towers next to each other on the same table and your eyes can tell which is taller without counting anything.
Stand them side by side
Stand two objects next to each other on the same flat surface, lined up at the bottom. One reaches higher than the other. That one is taller.
