The big idea

Subtraction can mean: start with an amount, remove some, count what's left.

Think of it like a jar of cookies someone eats from: Start with 7 cookies, someone eats 3, and what stays in the jar is the answer.

Eat from the jar

The jar has 7 cookies. Someone eats 3. The cookies didn't disappear by magic; they were removed. Count what's left in the jar: 4.
