Guess the jar
Ages 3–5The big idea
A good estimate is a smart guess checked against something you already know, not a random number.
Think of it like guessing how many pebbles fill a jar: You can't count a whole jar of pebbles at a glance, but you can compare it to a smaller group you already know, like 5 or 10, to make a smart guess.
Take a quick look
Look at a jar of pebbles for a few seconds, then look away. You can't know the exact number yet, but you can guess: is it closer to a little handful, or a lot?
👉 Look at a small collection briefly and say your first guess out loud before counting.
