Breaking one into fair parts

Grades 3–4

The big idea

A fraction is one whole cut into equal parts; the bottom number says how many parts.

Think of it like sharing one chocolate bar: Snap one bar into 4 equal pieces and take 1; that single piece is one-fourth of the bar.

Snap the bar fairly

One chocolate bar, two friends. Snap it into 2 equal pieces; each piece is one half. Fair means the pieces are the same size; uneven pieces aren't halves.
