A machine with a rule
Grades 5–6The big idea
A function is a machine: put a number in, it follows one rule, a number comes out.
Think of it like a vending machine, or a 'doubling' machine: Press a button (the input) and the SAME rule always gives the same result (the output). Reliable rule in, reliable answer out.
This one matters most. Algebra is absolutely essential. It is the gateway every later subject runs through: fractions and percentages, geometry, science, money, coding, and every grade of math after this. Nothing past here opens without it, so this is the one strand no child should skip.
In goes 3, out comes 6
Imagine a magic box with a rule: 'double it.' Put in 3, out comes 6. Put in 5, out comes 10. The box never changes its mind — the same input always gives the same output. That's the whole idea of a function.
👉 Be the 'add 2' machine. A friend calls a number; you instantly answer that number plus 2.
