Finding a spot with two numbers
Grades 5–6The big idea
Two numbers can name any exact spot: how far across, then how far up.
Think of it like a seat in a theater: your row and your seat number: One number alone can't find your seat; 'row 4, seat 7' pins it exactly. A grid works the same: across, then up.
This one matters most. Algebra is absolutely essential. It is the gateway every later subject runs through: fractions and percentages, geometry, science, money, coding, and every grade of math after this. Nothing past here opens without it, so this is the one strand no child should skip.
Across, then up
Play 'treasure grid.' To find the treasure you need two clues: go 3 squares across, then 2 squares up. One clue isn't enough. Two numbers, in order, land on one exact square.
👉 Hide a treasure on a grid and give a friend only two numbers to find it: across, then up.
Wonder out loud
