Leftovers (remainders)

Grades 5–6

The big idea

Sometimes a fair share leaves a few that can't be split evenly: the leftovers.

Think of it like sharing candy when it doesn't come out even: 13 candies among 3 friends gives 4 each, with 1 candy that can't be shared without breaking it.

When it won't come out even

Now you have 13 candies for 3 friends. Deal them out fairly: 4 each uses 12. One candy is left, and you can't give it out without cutting it. That single candy is the leftover.
